The Origin of Demons and Satan

Revelation 12:7-9

7) And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the Dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8) but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9) So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. NKJ

The origin of Satan and his demons deals with unnatural power and dominion over intelligent beings. The scope is universal in that Satan has no respect of race, nation or person. Our world is rapidly and drastically changing. Occult forces are attacking our society. Satanism is springing up in every city and town.

Christians are becoming more aware of the influence of demons. Not so many years ago those who took a stand against demons were criticized and not believed. That time is gone. Now Christians want information on how to discern demon power. They want to know how to cast demons out. They also want to know how to keep people free from the influence of satanic forces.

There are three known sources of energy in our universe.

Our universe is no accident. It did not evolve through erratic and accidental forces of unknown origin. The functions and movements of the world are intricate. The unlimited galaxies of the heavenly bodies in outer space are vast. Our universe is real but demonic forces have invaded it.

I. The first of the three known intelligent sources of energy in our realm of knowledge is God.

There is God's power

1) There is God's power.

Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

God is the creative and benevolent personality of the universe.

Omnipotent-has all power Jer 32:17, 19, 27

Omnipresent-is ever present Palms 139:7-12

Omniscience-is all knowing I Jn 3:20

Acts 10:38, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Hebrew 1:1, God, who at various times in different ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,

2) There is Satan's power

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal kill, and to kill and destroy: I have come that they might have life and that they have it more abundantly.

The devil is an evil-minded personally who seeks to destroy God's work and man's life. As a revolutionary, he upset the heaven. He collected angelic followers and they became fallen angels.

Satan is spoken of directly over 200 times in the Bible. Matthew 4:3,6, 8 shows the audacity of Satan in tempting the Lord Jesus Christ.

Prince of the power of air Eph 2:2...He is powerful but his power is limited Job1:12, Job 2:6

Satan does not want the truth about him revealed. He hates exposure of his deeds and camouflages himself as an angel of light (II Cor 11:14)

There is Man's power

3) Man is a neutral power with the potential to become a part of the good or the bad power. The Apostle Paul said to man in Roman 6:16, Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, whether sin dead, or of obedience to righteous? You are someone's slave! God or Satan.

Turn to I Cor 2:11-15, I Cor 2:2-5, Roma 7:14-25, Romans 8:5-11

Satan's Origin & Identity

We will look at two Old Testament scriptures, Isaiah 14: 12-14 and Ezekiel 28: 12-19. These scriptures give a picture of Satan's original condition and the reason for his loss of that position. The scriptures were addressed originally to the king of Babylon in Isaiah and the king of Tyre in Ezekiel.

But, the language goes beyond the kings to Satan. Let's focus on Ezekiel first.

Ezek 28:12-19

12        "Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

13        You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.

14        "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.

15        You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.

16        "By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones.

17        "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, that they might gaze at you.

18        "You defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading; therefore I brought fire from your midst; it devoured you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all who saw you.

19        All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; you have become a horror, and shall be no more forever."

(NKJ)

The earthly king of Tyre was Ithobalus II. The supernatural king of Tyre was Lucifer who is mostly referred to in this prophecy. Lucifer is the name of Satan, which means brightness, morning star.

vs12

Not content to be the beautiful, intelligent creature of God and of the highest order of angels, Satan aspired to a position of equally with God. His contest seems to have been most specifically with Jesus Christ, although the entire Godhead was challenged! This conflict has endured through the ages and will not be entirely consummated until Satan is cast into the lake of fire forever and ever.

Lucifer was created an archangel, the highest order of God's creation. This description in Ezekiel 28 can only be applied to a supernatural being. Full of wisdom was and is true of Lucifer, which could not be true of any earthly king of Tyre.

Lucifer was perfect in beauty, which could never be said of any fallen man. He must have been a gorgeous creature to look upon. It was the cause of his pride and fall.

vs13

Eden, his headquarters, was a paradise. His own clothing was "covered" with the most costly of stones.

He is the first created being with musical ability. There is documented evidence that heavy metal rock music has seduced and is seducing young people.

This accounts for the tremendous use of music Satan makes today, damning souls through music when he used to lead praise to God with music. Musical instruments were originally designed to be a means to praise and worship God. Lucifer did not have to learn how to play an instrument he was an instrument. Because of his beauty, Lucifer did what a musical instrument would do in the hands of a skilled musician, bring forth a paean of praise to the glory of God.

vs14-15

Only Lucifer or some other angel could be an anointed cherub. No man could be one. God set this cherub over the earth to protect it, overshadow

it and rule it. He did not set the king of Tyre on his throne, for merely succeeded his earthly father.

Satan's titles, his abilities and his sphere of influence are clearly defined. He is called the cherub that covereth. He is spoken of as walking up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Fire is often used to speak of the presence of Jehovah: the burning bush, sacrificial fire, fire of incense, pillar of fire.

Hebrew 12:29, For our God is a consuming fire.

Cherubs attended to the holiness of God.

In the tabernacle and temple, cherubs were represented by two golden figures of two winged living creatures. They covered the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies.

Exodus 25:20, And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.

Satan was "the anointed cherub" or mimshach in the Hebrew language. It is used but once in the Old Testament and signifies outspreading as of wings.

vs16-17

Satan's greed and lust of physical and material things superseded his spiritual service to Jehovah.

Here was a creature, or a created being that was a covering cherub, one of the angels of heaven. Ezekiel 28:17 says, "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor." Now notice what comes next, "I will cast you to the ground." This happened before Adam ever sinned, before Adam was ever put in the garden. Let's compare Isaiah's record,

Isaiah 14: 12-14. "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer." Now do you see the comparison? "How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!

How are you cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will also sit on the mount of the congregation, on the farthest sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High." This is talking about what happened when Lucifer sinned.

Lucifer had a kingdom, he had a throne, he ruled, because he said and notice the five foolish and fatal "I wills" in these verses, "I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will ascend into heaven, I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north; I will ascend above the clouds; I will be like the most High." In other words, he wasn't satisfied just with his kingdom, he wanted to take it all over and run the whole thing.

Satan had a kingdom of some kind down here before Adam ever existed, because he was in Eden. When he came on the scene, and approached Adam and Eve in the garden, he was already a fallen being.

The multitude of Lucifer's possessions lifted his heart with pride. These have been his major tools in tempting men into sin ever since, pride of possession and pride of physical beauty. If these things could produce iniquity in the "cherub that covereth" how easily will they produce iniquity in sinful flesh like ours!

In the New Testament, the Apostle John warned believers to be aware of three deadly temptations. These are (1) the lust of the flesh, (2) the lust of the eyes, and (3) the pride of life. 1John 2:15-17.

In the Garden, Satan subjected Eve to all three. Satan was well acquainted, as this Ezekiel passage shows, with these lusts. They caused his own downfall.

SATAN
Commander of the Kingdom of darkness (Lu.
11:18)

Aliases: Lucifer, the Devil, Prince of the power of the air, Beelzebub, Lord of the flies, God of this World, Dragon, Prince of this world, King of Tyrus, the wicked one, the enemy, murderer, a liar, ruler of darkness, the tempter, the king of death a roaring lion, Adversary, Abaddon (destruction), Appollyon (Destroyer), accuser of the brethren, and the deceiver.

Jn 14:30, Lu 4:6, Rev 12:9, Mt 12:24, Mt13:19,39, Jn 8:44, Eph 6:12, I Thess 3:5, Heb 2:14, 1Pet 5:8, Rev 9:11, Rev 12:10.

 (Jn. 14:30) (Lu. 4:6) (Rev. 12:9) (Mt. 12:24)

He is of the highest rank of the angels created by God. Because of his pride (for he was very beautiful), he rebelled against God. It was not enough to be the cherub that covered, he wanted to be equal with God. Because of his sin Lucifer and the angels that were aligned with him were cast out of heaven (God's presence) into the heavenlies where they continue their rebellion (war) against God. (Lu. 10:18) (Is. 14:12-14) (Rev. 12:9) (Eze. 28:12-19) (Rev. 12:9) (Ju. 1:9)

Characteristics:

1)      Cunning -Gen 3:1, 2 Cor 11:3

2)      Slanderous-Job 1:9

3)      Fierce-Luke 8:29

4)      Deceitful-2 Cor 11:14

5)      Powerful but it is limited-Job 1:12

  • And more.
  • He is a finite created being and operates temporarily with God's permission (Eze. 28:13) (Rev.12:12)
  • His knowledge is limited (If Satan knew that crucifying Jesus would destroy his own evil kingdom he never would have done it.) (1Co. 2:8)
  • Christians have power over him, in Jesus name (Mark 16:17-18) (Lu. 10:19)

Tactics:
Satan attempts to deceive people to following after anything except God (i.e. money, fame, lust, power, or themselves). He knows if they follow after these things they're really following him. (Mk. 4:13-9) (Mat. 13:18-22) (Ja. 4:4)

He is a defeated foe for we have power over him in Jesus' name although he is not to be taken lightly. (Jude 1:9) (Acts 19:14-16)

God will eventually throw Satan and his allies into Hell for that's what Hell was made for. (II Thes. 2:8) (Mt. 25:41) (Heb. 2:14) (I John 3:8)

IV. Demons. Names: Evil spirits, devils, tormentors

The bible teaches that apart from Satan, the prince and power of the air, there exists evil spirits of lesser degree of leadership and power, Their designation as demons is from the Greek word diabolos, meaning adversary, false accusers and slanderer, and from the Latin word daemon meaning evil spirit.

In Satan's rebellion in heaven he drew with him a great multitude of lesser celestial beings. Just as Satan chose to rebel against God, those who followed him chose to rebel against God also.

Revelation 12:4

And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Matthew 25:41

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed into everlasting fire, prepare for the devil and his angels.

These are called " the devil's angels."

Their Own Purpose: To assist (or serve) Satan and whomever else he directs them to hinder.

Characteristics of Demons or Their Involvement:

  • Many times a person oppressed or possessed by a demon displays unhealthy or unnatural cravings or actions. The result of such oppression or possession by a demon will always have a destructive effect on the victim (spiritually, emotionally and physically). (Mark. 9:17-29)
  • They have different degrees of power. (Mat. 17:18-21)

They are eternal beings, already sentenced to Hell and will be placed there after the final judgment. (Mt. 25:41) (2 Pe. 2:4) (Ju. 1:6)

Tactics

They seek to in-dwell or attach themselves to humans or animal in order to influence their actions. (Mt. 12:43-45) ( Mat. 8:30-32) (Lu.11:25)

  • They have different rank, power and authority; (Da. 10:13)
  • They have a free will (i.e. since these are the angels who rebelled against God and followed Lucifer); (Jude 1:6)
  • They are eternal beings and have already been sentenced to Hell and will be placed there after the final judgment. (Mt. 25:41)
  • They do not reproduce, since they are neither male nor female; (Mt. 22:30) (Mk. 12:25)
  • They can take on the appearance of a human or an animal  (Gen. 3:1)

DEMONS
Disembodied spirits seeming to have intense craving to cause evil of every kind.
Purpose: To bring people in to bondage to the evil appetites they propagate thereby serving Satan's interests and because of this are aligned with him against God. (Jn. 10:10)
Demons seem to receive vicarious pleasure from tormenting and generally ruining a person's life.

For the Christian, being a soldier is not an option. It is our only option. We are born into the battle when we become Christians. (Eph. 6)

Do I Need Deliverance?

Luke 4:18-19

The spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives , and the recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

How Demons Enter-

Demons we have found are evil personalities whose objectives in human lives are to tempt, deceive, accuse, condemn pressure, defile, resist, oppose, control, steal, afflict, kill, and destroy.

School Hallway example

Image you are in a school building and you are standing at one end of a long hallway. Along that hallway is about 10-15 doors to classrooms on each side. As we go through life we are walking down that hall. Image all the doors being closed. The doors represent entry points in our lives become open in varies ways .And demons can enter through:

  • Sin
  • Life circumstances
  • Inheritance

Ways To Determine If You Need Deliverance

The presence and nature of evil spirits can be know by 2 principles:

Do I Need Deliverance?

Pray and ask the Lord to reveal to you areas that you may need deliverance in.

Here are some scriptures that assures us that God wants us delivered and set free.

Psa 18:50Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.

Psa 32:7Thou [art] my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

Joe 2:32And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
